Padres pitching problems: Lamet, Clevinger off wild-card roster

The Padres left injured starting right-handers Dinelson Lamet and Mike Clevinger off their roster for the National League wild-card series, which begins Wednesday in San Diego.

Lamet (right biceps tightness) and Mike Clevinger (right elbow impingement) are on the taxi squad, meaning either could join the team if needed for an injury replacement or if the Padres advance to the NL Division Series. Clevinger, however, is unlikely to return, which would leave the Padres woefully shorthanded for an extended playoff run.

Game 1 against the St. Louis Cardinals is set to start at 5:08 p.m. ET. This is the Padres' first appearance in the postseason since 2006, and right-hander Chris Paddack (4-5, 4.73 ERA) will start. Zach Davies (7-4, 2.73), acquired in an offseason trade with the Milwaukee Brewers, is expected to start Game 2.

Game 3, if necessary, likely would be a bullpen game.

Lamet last pitched Friday against the San Francisco Giants but left the game after 3 2/3 innings -- his shortest outing of the season -- with what manager Jayce Tingler called "tightness in his bicep area."

In the regular season, the 28-year-old Lamet started 12 games and posted a 3-1 record with a 2.09 ERA. He struck out 93 over 69 innings.

The Padres acquired Clevinger at the trade deadline from the Cleveland Indians to bolster their playoff chances. In four starts, the 29-year-old was 2-1 with a 2.84 ERA. He threw 19 innings and struck out 19 but left his final start of the season -- Sept. 23 against the Los Angeles Angels -- after just one inning with elbow pain.

ESPN's Jeff Passan reported Wednesday that Clevinger could be done for the season.

"A Tuesday bullpen session didn't resolve questions about his short- and long-term arm health," Passan tweeted. "Significant concerns persist."
