San Diego Padres right-hander Mike Clevinger's return to the mound didn't last long.

After the Padres skipped his last start, Clevinger was removed from Wednesday afternoon's game against the Los Angeles Angels following one inning of work.

An immediate reason for the early departure was not announced, although Clevinger did experience right biceps tightness last week.

Wednesday's start was Clevinger's last before he presumably was set to take the mound for Game 1 in the National League wild-card series.

Clevinger, 29, entered Wednesday's game with a 3-2 record and a 3.10 ERA in seven starts -- four with Cleveland and three with San Diego.

Clevinger was acquired from the Indians in a blockbuster nine-player deal at the Aug. 31 trade deadline. Clevinger had fallen out of favor in Cleveland after he and fellow right-hander Zach Plesac violated team safety and health policies by going out with friends in Chicago on Aug. 8.
