Navy rolls out transport, manpower aid to mitigate the COVID-19 scare

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, April 3 (PIA) - - The Naval Forces Northern Luzon (NFNL) has rolled out its transportation and manpower assistance for the mitigation of the effect of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) scare.

Commodore Caesar Bernard N. Valencia, the commander of the NFNL based in Poro Point, this city, said in a press statement that his command has prepared all its assets and manpower for a quick response for any requests from other government agencies and local government units (LGUs) concerning on COVID -19.

Initially, Commodore Valencia directed the Naval Task Force CV Shield Batanes to deploy their BRP Magat Salamat (PS20) for the transport of the medical supplies and Personal Protective Equipments (PPEs) to Batanes upon receipt of the request of the LGU.

According to Lieutenant Commander Rodney Cudal, the chief of the Civil-Military Operations of the NFNL, the Batanes province, through Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer (PDRRMO) Caesar Roldan S Esdicul requested a transport assistance from the NFNL following the suspension of the regular means of shipping goods from Manila to Batanes due to the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).

Upon approval of the request, the PPEs, assorted medicines, and supplies procured by the provincial government of Batanes in Manila were brought to NFNL.

The NFNL also received additional supplies and equipment intended for delivery to Batanes from the Department of Health (DOH) Regional Office Region 2 on March 21 and 29, 2020.

"On March 30, 2020, the NFNL ship, PS20, left San Fernando City, La Union bound to Basco, Batanes for the delivery of the PPEs and assorted medicines and supplies," said Cudal.

Besides, the NTF-CV Shield Batanes also deployed its personnel to different checkpoints in the municipalities of Batan, and Itbayat, Batanes to augment the frontliners in the implementation of the ECQ protocols.

Meanwhile, Commodore Valencia said that his command had also provided the manpower for the hauling of 2,400 boxes of assorted canned goods and the repacking of 4,100 Family Food Packs (FFPs) at the DSWD Field Office 1 Warehouse, Barangay Biday, San Fernando City, La Union on March 25 - 27, 2020 for distribution to the households in the city.

The NFNL also provided manpower for the hauling of 3,700 caravans of rice and distribution of 3,172 family food packs (FFPs) to six barangays of San Fernando City, La Union on March 28 - 29, 2020 in support to the City's DRRMC relief operations.

The NFNL's reservists were also deployed to different areas in Ilocos Norte, Pangasinan, Zambales, Baguio City, and Aparri, Cagayan to augment the frontliners in the conduct of checkpoints and repacking of relief goods since the implementation of ECQ.
